Healthcare Services

  • Vaccinations

It is important for all dogs and cats to have a yearly vaccination so they are covered for preventable diseases.

Aside from the healthcare benefits of the vaccine itself, a yearly visit to the clinic means we can perform a full health check on your pet and discuss any issues or concerns.

Please scroll down to read more information about vaccines, and what they cover for.

  • Parasite Control

We recommend keeping on top of parasite treatments for your pets as a preventative healthcare measure. Once infested, it is harder to eliminate these parasites than to prevent them.

We have a variety of flea, tick, mite and worm treatments available, which our friendly reception team can help you choose between based on your preference and what will work best for your pet.

  • Radiography (X-Rays)

Our hospital is fully equipped to take radiographs (often called x-rays) of your pet. Our veterinarians will discuss your pet’s case and conduct a thorough physical examination to determine if your pet requires radiographs.

We usually will admit your pet to hospital for several hours, during which we will take the x-rays, examine them, and create a treatment plan. Often, we need to sedate your pet as we usually need them to lay very still in uncomfortable positions.

  • Ultrasonography

Our hospital is equipped with an ultrasound scanner to assist evaluation of your pet’s condition if required. Our veterinarians will discuss your pet’s case and conduct a thorough physical examination to determine if your pet requires an ultrasound examination. An ultrasound scan is a very important tool to help us diagnose diseases in animals, particularly for conditions involving the abdomen, or the heart.

Your pet will be admitted for several hours, and may require a sedation as it is important for them to lay very still during the scan.

  • Clinical Pathology

We can run many pathology tests in house, including several blood tests, skin and ear cytology for diagnosing infections, tissue samples, urinalyses and many more. We have lots of up-to-date, modern equipment to enable us to run these tests.

Usually, we can give you these results on the same day as testing, or within 7 business days if needing to be sent away to an external lab.

  • Specialist Referrals

When an animal develops an unusual or more complex illness or injury, there is often a need for specialised expertise and equipment to properly diagnose and treat the problem. If your pet has a problem that requires this level of expertise we can refer you to a specialist that has earned our trust and confidence in order to give your pet the optimal chance of recovery.

Australian registered veterinary specialists undergo a rigorous training and examination process to obtain their qualifications, and like human specialists are considered to be the epitome of knowledge in their field. We work closely alongside the specialists and together can offer optimal care for pets that require this service.

If you do attend a specialist appointment, they will send us all the details so we can keep up to date with your pet's journey.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations are a vital part of your pet’s health, providing essential preventative care. Unvaccinated pets are at a much higher risk of contracting infectious diseases that could be otherwise avoided.

Vaccinations should be done yearly in all cats, dogs and rabbits, once an initial course has been completed.

At each vaccination appointment, your pet will receive a full health check, performed by either a vet or nurse and discussion around any concerns or worries you may be having with your pet.

Dogs and cats age approximately 5 times faster than humans on average, so a yearly check is essential for us to keep up with them and allow us to detect problems early.

Dog Vaccines:

Different clinics have different vaccine schedules, but at Your Family Vet adult dogs are given a C3 vaccine every 3 years, and a kennel cough vaccine every year. When the two vaccines are due at the same time, they combine to form a C5 vaccine.

The C3 vaccine covers for Parvovirus, Distemper and Hepatitis. The kennel cough vaccine covers for Parainfluenza and Bordetella.

Cat Vaccines:

We routinely use two different vaccines here at Your Family Vet: an Fe3 and an FIV, both of which are given yearly.

The Fe3 vaccine covers for Calicivirus, Herpesvirus and Panleukopenia virus.

The FIV vaccine protects against Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, which is quite common in our area and can be spread through saliva, for instance when cats fight.

At this stage the Australia-wide shortage of FIV vaccines will continue in 2024 and we will notify all clients on the waiting list as soon as we have supply of the vaccine. If you would like your pet to be added to the waiting list please contact that clinic.
